Charlotte City Council Designates Historic Landmarks and Announces Youth Opportunities Office

The City Council of Charlotte convened on August 25, 2025, to address several key agenda items, including the designation of historic landmarks and updates on city departments.

The meeting commenced with a motion to designate the property known as the Dr. Williams and Vivian Williams House as a historic landmark, effective immediately. The motion received unanimous support from council members, with no opposition voiced during the public hearing. Following this, another motion was made to designate the Ziegler Bowers House as a historic landmark, which also passed without opposition.

City Manager's report highlighted the establishment of the Office of Youth Opportunities, aimed at consolidating various youth programs previously scattered across different departments. This initiative is designed to enhance youth engagement, employment, and safety. The manager noted that the city provided paid employment opportunities for 400 young people over the summer and is developing additional career pathways focused on leasing and entrepreneurship for youth aged 14 to 15.

In personnel updates, the council recognized the promotion of Marie Harris to permanent budget director and Matt Hastet to chief financial officer, following the retirement announcement of current CFO Teresa. Additionally, Cheryl Wright was introduced as the new director of the Department of Contracting and Procurement, bringing extensive experience from her previous roles.
