County Commissioners Approve $21K for IT Upgrades and $5K for Shellfish Health Project

Clallam County officials have taken significant steps to enhance local infrastructure and public health services during the Commissioner’s Board Meeting on August 26, 2025. A key resolution was passed to adopt a series of emergency funding measures, totaling over $1 million, aimed at addressing critical needs in the community.

The board approved funding for various projects, including $500,000 for broadband infrastructure, which will extend services from Port Angeles to Joyce. This initiative is part of a broader effort to improve internet access in underserved areas, a concern echoed by community members during public testimony. The resolution also included $117,807 for federal force replacement and $203,612 for the American Industrial Planning Act.

During the meeting, discussions highlighted the challenges faced in securing broadband funding, with local officials expressing frustration over the state’s allocation processes. However, the successful application for this competitive project marks a positive development for residents who have long awaited improved connectivity.

In addition to infrastructure funding, the board approved budget revisions to support health and human services. A total of $21,000 was allocated for IT equipment, including laptops for public health operations, while another $160,000 was shifted to cover unexpected leave payouts due to retirements and terminations within the sheriff's department.

The meeting concluded with the unanimous approval of supplemental appropriations, further bolstering the county's health services with an additional $5,000 for environmental health initiatives related to shellfish monitoring.
