Doctor Engelbrecht discusses new esports initiative for local middle and high schools

Esports is set to make a significant debut in Lawrence Public Schools, with the Board of Education discussing its official sanctioning during the recent meeting on August 25, 2025. Deputy Superintendent Dr. Engelbrecht led the conversation, highlighting the transformative potential of esports for student engagement.

Dr. Engelbrecht emphasized that nearly half of students participating in esports across the nation had never engaged in any school activities before, marking a crucial opportunity for fostering school connections. “This is not just a competition; it’s an activity that can bring students together,” he stated, underscoring the importance of inclusivity in the program.

The Kansas State High School Activities Association has officially sanctioned esports as an interscholastic activity starting this school year, a move that surprised many in attendance. This program will be available to all middle and high school students, allowing them to participate both as a club and in sanctioned competitions.

The state association has partnered with PlayVS, a recognized esports competition platform, which will ensure fair play and protect student privacy. Notably, PlayVS will cover all fees for the first year, easing the financial burden on schools as they establish their esports programs.

Upcoming informational meetings are scheduled to assist schools in implementing esports, with the first session already held. The next meeting on September 15 will focus on the necessary hardware requirements for participation, ensuring that schools are well-prepared for the launch of this exciting new initiative.
