Kansas Education Board Sets New Cut Scores for Kansas Assessment Program

The Lawrence Public Schools Board of Education convened on August 25, 2025, to discuss several key topics, including facilities updates, negotiations strategies, and educational funding reforms.

One of the primary discussions centered on ongoing facilities projects, highlighting the significant usage of school buildings during the summer, with 654 events held in July alone. Updates included various construction and repair projects across multiple schools, such as asphalt work at Sunflower Elementary, the installation of new playground equipment, and urgent repairs at LMCMS. The board also previewed upcoming discussions regarding the acquisition of a replacement chiller for Lawrence High School.

Negotiations were another focal point, with board members expressing interest in transitioning from traditional bargaining methods to interest-based bargaining. This approach aims to foster more dialogue and collaboration during negotiations. The board acknowledged the need to finalize discussions on this shift, especially as they work to address the recognition of Education Support Professionals (ESPs) under the Lawrence Education Association (LEA).

In addition, the board reviewed updates from the State Board of Education, which recently set new cut scores for the Kansas assessment program. This decision, although not unanimous, is expected to facilitate the release of assessment scores to parents and improve the alignment of current and previous exam standards.

The meeting also touched on the Education Funding Task Force's recent sessions, where discussions focused on reforming the special education funding formula. Board members noted the importance of involving professionals in the field to ensure that any new model is sustainable and equitable.
