Pittsburgh Public Library Reports Successful Summer Reading Program with Increased Participation

The Pittsburgh Public Library's summer reading program made a significant impact this year, as highlighted by Library Director Bev Clarkson during the City Commission meeting on August 26, 2025. Clarkson reported an impressive 15,701 in-person visits to the library in June and July, with 772 kids and teens participating in the reading program alongside 57 adults. Together, they read a total of 17,812 books and earned 1,866 incentives, including swim passes and various prizes.

This year's theme, "Color Our World," inspired a variety of engaging activities, including puppet shows, crafts, and educational programs that combined fun with learning. Notably, the library hosted 70 free in-person programs, attracting 5,609 community members, and offered 16 self-directed activities that reached an additional 4,231 participants.

Clarkson expressed gratitude to community partners, including the City of Pittsburgh and local organizations, for their support in making the summer programs successful. She also announced the upcoming Labor Day book sale, which will take place on August 30, offering books at affordable prices to benefit library programs.

The meeting underscored the library's vital role in promoting literacy and community engagement, with Clarkson emphasizing the importance of community support in enriching the library's offerings. The positive feedback from city officials highlighted the program's success and its significance to the local community.
