San Antonio Council Discusses Budget Allocations for Youth Violence and Nonprofit Support

They noted that data from public safety presentations supports the effectiveness of these nonprofits in reducing violence, particularly among youth. The conversation included a proposal to revisit the ambassador internship program, which aims to provide skills and opportunities for young people aged 16 to 24, addressing the youth violence epidemic in San Antonio.

Benny Price, CEO of Big Mama Safe House, presented the organization's initiatives aimed at supporting unhoused youth and those aging out of foster care. He urged the council to include funding for their youth employment programs in the city budget, arguing that investing in community organizations yields measurable returns in public safety.

Additionally, the council discussed budget adjustments, including a proposal to reallocate discretionary funds to hire more police officers, addressing the current shortage in the police force. Councilman White suggested cutting a million dollars from discretionary funds to support the hiring of additional officers, emphasizing the need for a safer community.

The meeting also touched on the budget for Metro Health, which has nearly doubled since 2019 due to investments in the SA Forward plan. Council members expressed the need for continued scrutiny of budget allocations to ensure that funds are directed towards core city services and effective community programs.

As the council prepares for further budget discussions in October, the focus remains on balancing fiscal responsibility with the need to support vital community services that contribute to public safety and youth development.
