Shawnee Mission East Choir Students Authorized for European Trip with $400K Budget

The Shawnee Mission School District Board made headlines during their August 25, 2025 meeting by approving an exciting international trip for the Shawnee Mission East choir students. The board authorized a travel plan that will take approximately 40 students to Budapest, Hungary; Bratislava, Slovakia; Vienna, Austria; and Prague, Czech Republic. The trip, which is expected to cost up to $400,000, will be funded entirely through student fundraising and personal contributions, with no district funds involved.

Board member Sinclair moved for the approval, which was seconded by Ausslee, and the motion passed unanimously with a 6-0 vote. This trip is seen as a significant opportunity for students to experience cultural enrichment and musical education abroad, with three district employees and ten approved volunteers set to supervise the group.
