Decatur Island Community Raises Concerns Over Proposed Land Acquisition by San Juan County

Concerns over a proposed land acquisition on Decatur Island dominated the San Juan County Council Special Meeting on August 26, 2025. Community members voiced strong opposition to the purchase, citing significant environmental and infrastructural issues that could arise from the development.

Local resident James Pearson raised alarms about the property’s suitability for public use, highlighting the island's rapid growth due to remote work and the inadequate infrastructure to support it. He pointed out that the existing septic and well systems on the beachfront properties are at risk of failure, particularly given the land's floodplain and wetland designations. "This piece of property is not large enough," he stated, emphasizing that any septic system failure would leave no viable options for replacement.

Debbie Warren, another Decatur Island resident, echoed these concerns, arguing against changing the land's zoning from seasonal residential to a public access area. "We need to leave the rural islands rural," she insisted, warning that the proposed changes could lead to inadequate facilities for public use and potential financial burdens on the county.

Lincoln Score also expressed the need for thorough due diligence, urging the council to ensure that all environmental and infrastructural issues are addressed before proceeding with the acquisition. He requested access to existing reports on the property to better understand its implications for the community.

The council discussed the potential acquisition, which was initially proposed to enhance marine facilities and public access. However, the feasibility study for the property is set to conclude on August 29, prompting the council to consider whether to terminate the purchase agreement or continue deliberations until September 30.

Council member Paulson acknowledged the mixed feedback from the community, noting both support and opposition to the project. He emphasized the importance of addressing the community's concerns while also considering the county's marine infrastructure needs.
