City Begins 2026 Budget Season Amid Ongoing Recruitment Challenges for Police Officers

The Saratoga Civil Service Commission meeting held on August 27, 2025, focused on several key topics, including budget discussions, staffing appointments, and upcoming civil service exams.

The meeting began with the approval of labor class appointments, specifically for six cleaners and two food service helpers. This motion was unanimously accepted by the commission members.

Carissa, a representative from the commission, reported that the 2026 budget season has officially commenced. While the overall budget remains unchanged from the previous year, there is a slight increase due to a request for a mid-year full-time hire. Carissa noted that discussions regarding the budget will continue as the season progresses, with potential adjustments based on various factors, including medical costs and insurance.

The commission is also in the process of establishing eligible lists for various positions, although the number of exam announcements has decreased compared to previous years. Currently, there are only a few vacancies due to retirements and resignations.

A significant point of discussion was the upcoming entry-level police officer exam scheduled for September 20. Carissa mentioned that there are currently 18 applicants, which is considered low. The commission is hopeful that the application numbers will increase as the filing deadline approaches on September 3. This exam is being offered twice a year for the first time due to statewide recruitment challenges.

Carissa also highlighted the importance of the physical agility test, which is part of the hiring process. Out of 47 candidates invited to the last physical agility test, 20 attended, and 16 were successful. The commission is optimistic about better turnout for the upcoming exam.

The meeting concluded with a reminder of the next scheduled meeting on September 24, 2025. Overall, the discussions underscored ongoing efforts to address staffing needs and recruitment challenges within the Saratoga Springs civil service framework.
