Council discusses costly options for securing courthouse exterior doors

Rockwall County officials are considering a significant upgrade to the courthouse's exterior doors, with discussions centering on the best materials and costs involved. During a recent Commissioners Court Special Meeting, the focus was on replacing nine exterior doors, including two that are nearing the end of their lifespan.

The estimated cost for aluminum doors is approximately $113,000, while wooden doors would run about $140,000. However, sourcing wooden doors has proven challenging, as many restoration companies are prioritizing larger projects. Officials noted that if they replace the two east and west doors, it would be visually inconsistent not to replace all four doors on that side of the building.

A phased approach to the project was suggested, allowing for a gradual upgrade while maintaining the building's aesthetic. The discussion also included the need for a handicap-accessible door, which would remain unchanged if it is functioning properly.

In addition to the door replacements, the court discussed the installation of a phone system, which is expected to cost a couple of thousand dollars due to its proximity to existing electrical infrastructure.

As the county weighs its options, the decisions made in this meeting could lead to enhanced security and accessibility for the courthouse, reflecting a commitment to maintaining the facility's integrity while addressing practical needs.
