Carlsbad City Library presents author events featuring local and touring writers

The City of Carlsbad Library Board of Trustees convened on August 27, 2025, to discuss various initiatives aimed at enhancing community engagement through literary events. The meeting featured a detailed report from the library's author team, presented by librarians Ashley Vindon and Liza Blue.

Director Smithson opened the session by introducing the presenters, who provided an overview of the library's author programs from 2023 to 2025. The primary objective of the author team, which includes five members, is to foster a vibrant literary culture by selecting authors that align with the library's vision of being a destination for information, reading enjoyment, lifelong learning, and cultural enrichment.

During their presentation, Vindon and Blue highlighted four key areas: the team's objectives, notable authors who have visited the library, a recap of the 2024 and 2025 local author fair, and a preview of upcoming author events. They emphasized the importance of selecting authors whose works resonate with the community and reflect diverse heritage themes.

The team collaborates with Adventures by the Book, an author booking agency, to host nationally recognized authors at a reduced cost, ensuring that events remain free and accessible to the public. Funding for these initiatives is provided by the Friends of the Carlsbad Library and the Robert H. Gartner Cultural Endowment Fund, specifically for events held at the Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium.

From 2023 to 2025, the library successfully hosted 20 author programs, excluding the Crossbred Reads Together events, showcasing its commitment to promoting literature and connecting authors with readers in the Carlsbad community. The meeting concluded with a positive outlook on future literary events and continued community engagement through the library's programs.
