Carlsbad Library Hosts Successful Author Events Featuring Best Sellers and Local Voices

The City of Carlsbad Library Board of Trustees convened on August 27, 2025, to discuss recent library events and updates from community organizations. The meeting highlighted the library's commitment to fostering community engagement through literary events and author presentations.

The library reported that over 1,300 patrons have attended various author events, which have included two local author fairs. These fairs featured local authors showcasing their works, alongside renowned authors such as Lisa C., William Kent Kruger, Kate Quinn, and Anna Platano, all of whom have appeared on the New York Times bestseller list. Notably, a recent event with author Matthew Quirk included a special screening of the Netflix adaptation of his book, "The Night Agent," followed by a discussion about his writing process.

In July 2024, the library hosted Kate Quinn in the newly designated Ann Colchon Courtyard, where 208 attendees enjoyed her insights into historical fiction writing. The library also celebrated Asian American Pacific Islander Month in May 2025 with a successful event featuring authors Rosa Quan Easton, Christina McMorris, and TikTok chef Sarah Ahn, which attracted 79 attendees.

The library's local author fairs have seen increasing success, with the second fair in June 2026 drawing 200 attendees. Feedback from authors indicated a desire for longer events, prompting the library to expand the program. Future events are already planned, including a talk by Rob Cressel on California avocados and discussions with local true crime author Caitlin Rother and Food Network star Pia de Spain.

Following the library's updates, Janine Dunn from the North San Diego County Genealogical Society provided insights into their recent programs. The society has seen strong attendance in its courses, including a memoir writing class that fosters community among participants. Upcoming events include a seminar featuring renowned speaker Judy Russell and a focus on artificial intelligence in genealogy.

The meeting concluded with a commitment to continue enhancing community engagement through diverse programming and events at the Carlsbad City Library. The board expressed enthusiasm for the library's ongoing efforts to connect patrons with authors and genealogical resources.
