Public Works Department Unveils $303M Infrastructure Improvement Plan Through 2026

San Antonio's City Council has unveiled a comprehensive budget proposal for 2026, focusing on significant infrastructure improvements and community safety initiatives. The proposed budget totals $303 million, which includes funding for essential public works programs aimed at enhancing the city's streets, sidewalks, and traffic management systems.

Key highlights from the budget discussion include a $110 million reduction in general funds, with a commitment to maintain and improve the condition of city streets and sidewalks. The plan allocates $122 million specifically for street maintenance, targeting approximately 1,464 projects based on the current condition of the roads. Additionally, $5 million is earmarked for repairing existing sidewalks, resulting in 34 miles of usable pathways.

The budget also emphasizes pedestrian safety, with $1 million dedicated to improving safety measures around 12 school zones and maintaining 729 existing school zone signs. Traffic calming measures, including the installation of new traffic signals and enhancements to pedestrian detection systems at intersections, are also prioritized.

In response to community feedback, the council plans to enhance communication regarding construction projects, providing updates every three months and notifications five days prior to project commencement. This initiative aims to minimize inconvenience for residents during construction phases.

Furthermore, the budget outlines a strategic approach to drainage improvements, allocating $11.45 million for repairing damaged roads and drainage systems, which is crucial for public safety and environmental protection.

The council's commitment to infrastructure development is evident, with plans to complete various projects by March 2027. This includes a focus on equity in funding distribution, ensuring that districts with greater needs receive more financial support.
