Montgomery County Veterans Memorial Commission proposes lease for park maintenance

The Conroe City Council convened on August 27, 2025, to address several key issues affecting the community, including legal matters, citizen concerns, and infrastructure updates. Following the closed session, the council reconvened for citizen participation, allowing residents to voice their concerns and suggestions. The first speaker, Elizabeth Woods, Executive Director of the Montgomery County Veterans Memorial Commission, requested the council consider leasing a green space north of Freedom Boulevard to the Commission. Woods emphasized the importance of the Veterans Memorial Park and the Commission's commitment to maintaining the area, which she described as sacred ground. She highlighted that the Commission would assume all maintenance responsibilities, potentially saving the city significant costs.

Next, Betty Boren Avery raised concerns about the current garbage and recycling service, detailing her difficulties in contacting the service provider and issues with missed pickups. She suggested that a cross-reference system be established to help residents navigate the service more effectively. The council responded by directing staff to work with Avery to address her concerns.

Becky Ullman, representing Lennar Homes and Friendswood Development Company, provided an update on a water line project under Interstate 25, which is expected to be completed in September. She noted that the city's water plant is scheduled for completion in October, indicating progress in local infrastructure development.

The meeting concluded with a commitment from the council to consider the proposals and concerns raised by citizens, ensuring ongoing communication and collaboration with the community. The council's next steps will include reviewing the lease proposal for the Veterans Memorial Park and addressing the issues with the garbage service provider.
