Volunteers of America partners with Lexington to enhance veterans' support services

A new partnership between Volunteers of America (VOA) and the city of Lexington aims to enhance support for veterans and their families, addressing critical needs for housing and mental health services. This initiative underscores the commitment to ensuring that every veteran receives the dignity and respect they deserve, particularly as they transition back to civilian life or cope with long-standing challenges.

During a recent meeting, representatives from VOA highlighted their Supportive Services for Veteran Families program, which assists unhoused veterans and those at risk of homelessness. The program provides outreach, case management, and help in accessing VA benefits, aiming to secure safe and permanent housing for those in need. In the fiscal year 2025, VOA reported serving 185 veterans and their families, helping many navigate housing crises and connect with essential resources.

In addition to housing support, the meeting emphasized the importance of mental health services through the Moral Injury and Preventing Suicide (MIPS) program. This initiative offers case management to veterans, active-duty members, and first responders, focusing on addressing psychological trauma and preventing suicide. The program recognizes the deep emotional scars that can result from military service, including feelings of guilt and shame.

The partnership also aims to create a welcoming space for veterans to gather, socialize, and decompress. Plans include a community center equipped with recreational facilities, such as a game room and fitness areas, where veterans can connect without the pressure of needing services. This initiative seeks to foster camaraderie and support, ensuring that no veteran feels isolated in their journey.
