Mount Diablo Unified School District Recognizes Suicide Prevention and Hispanic Heritage Months

The Mt. Diablo Unified School District Board made significant strides in promoting awareness and inclusivity during their recent meeting, approving multiple resolutions aimed at enhancing community support and education.

The board unanimously adopted Resolution 25/26-1, proclaiming September as Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. Dr. Clark emphasized the urgency of addressing youth suicide, which remains a leading cause of death among children aged 10 to 14. The resolution aims to foster safe and supportive school environments, reinforcing the district's commitment to mental health resources and timely intervention.

Following this, the board approved Resolution 25/26-2, recognizing September as Deaf Awareness Month and International Week of Deaf People. This resolution highlights the diverse communication methods within the deaf community, including American Sign Language (ASL). Trustee Nsele added depth to the discussion by acknowledging the cultural richness of ASL and the importance of recognizing various forms of sign language.

The board also proclaimed September as Attendance Awareness Month through Resolution 25/26-08, stressing the critical link between daily attendance and student achievement. With attendance rates significantly impacted post-COVID, the resolution aims to combat chronic absenteeism and ensure equitable learning opportunities for all students.

Lastly, the board celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month with Resolution 25/26-09, recognizing the contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans. Dr. Clark noted that approximately 42% of the district's population identifies as Hispanic or Latino, underscoring the importance of this celebration in the district's educational framework.
