Leander Council Approves Microtrenching Standards and Considers Zoning Change Request

Leander's Planning and Zoning Commission has taken significant steps towards commercial development in the area, as they approved a zoning change request during their recent meeting on August 28, 2025. The commission voted to amend the zoning of three parcels of land, totaling 12.595 acres, from interim single-family residential to general commercial. This change will facilitate the development of a martial arts training center and future commercial projects.

The properties, located at the southeast intersection of 183A Toll Road and Woodview Drive, are strategically positioned near existing commercial and residential developments, including Life Church and the future enclave at Stewart Crossing townhomes. The proposed zoning aligns with the city’s future land use map, which designates the area as a multi-use corridor, indicating a planned shift towards more diverse land use.

The commission's decision followed a thorough review process, including outreach to nearby property owners and homeowners associations, which yielded no significant concerns regarding the zoning change. The staff recommended approval based on the compatibility of the proposed use with surrounding developments.

In addition to this pivotal zoning decision, the commission also adopted new microtrenching ordinance standards, which will take effect 60 days from the adoption date. This ordinance aims to streamline the installation of underground utilities, enhancing infrastructure development in Leander.
