Weld County Develops Water Supply Strategy for Near and Long Term Needs

Adams County officials are tackling a pressing issue: the future of water supply in the region. During the Board of County Commissioners Study Session on August 27, 2025, discussions centered on the development of a comprehensive water strategy, crucial for supporting anticipated growth and industrial demands.

Key to the conversation was the Weld County Reservoir project, which is on track to secure state dam permits by the end of this year, with construction slated to begin in early 2026. This reservoir is expected to play a vital role in meeting both short-term and long-term water needs for new manufacturing facilities and other large users in the area. Officials highlighted the importance of a phased approach to water supply, integrating immediate solutions like drilling additional wells with longer-term strategies involving partnerships with entities like Tallgrass Energy.

Tallgrass, which has significant water rights across Northern Colorado, is positioned to provide both immediate and sustainable water solutions. Their involvement is seen as a critical asset, especially as the county prepares for potential large-scale industrial developments that could require up to two million gallons of water daily.

The meeting also emphasized the need for a robust advisory board to advocate for funding and resources, ensuring that the county can effectively navigate the complexities of water management.
