Pitkin County creates task forces for airport terminal design and multimodal connectivity

The Pitkin County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) made significant strides in enhancing local transportation and housing initiatives during their regular meeting on August 27, 2025. The meeting highlighted the formation of two crucial task forces aimed at improving multimodal connectivity and terminal design, as well as discussions on housing affordability.

The BOCC approved the establishment of the Aspen Airport terminal design task force and the multimodal connectivity task force, comprising a diverse group of community members. Notable members include John Cottle and Christophe Eigelberger for the terminal design, and Dan Blankenship and Steve Skadron for the connectivity task force. These groups are expected to play a vital role in public outreach and engagement, ensuring that community voices are heard in the planning process. The first joint meeting is scheduled for September 30, with plans for at least three public open houses throughout the fall to gather further input on design concepts.

Public comment during the meeting raised concerns about the selection process for the task forces. Local resident Tony Kronberg expressed disappointment over not being chosen, citing his extensive experience in airport operations and transportation. He urged the BOCC to consider including individuals with relevant expertise in future selections.

In addition to transportation discussions, the BOCC also addressed housing needs by approving the purchase of a two-bedroom condo in Basalt for $920,000, aimed at expanding the county's rental inventory. This move is part of ongoing efforts to tackle housing affordability in the region.

The meeting concluded with the BOCC approving an emergency resolution to increase funding for child support services provided by Garfield County, reflecting the county's commitment to supporting essential community services.
