Berkeley Park Board Approves Solar Panel Installation on Dorset Road Home

Syracuse's Landmark Preservation Board has approved a significant renovation project aimed at restoring the original design of a historic home’s front steps. During the meeting on August 28, 2025, the board unanimously agreed to a proposal that involves rebuilding the front steps and landing, which have undergone multiple repairs over the years. The homeowner plans to use brick that closely matches the house's exterior and hopes to uncover remnants of the original brick during the renovation.

The project will maintain the existing footprint of the steps, although they will be slightly shortened. The homeowner also intends to preserve a remnant of the original brick ribbon in front of the door, ensuring that the historical integrity of the property is upheld. The board confirmed that no handrails would be necessary due to the height of the steps.

In addition to the steps project, the board reviewed a proposal for solar panel installation at 108 Dorset Road, located in the Berkeley Park Preservation District. The homeowner, David Larson, presented plans to install 23 solar panels on the roof, which will be flush with the roofline and not visible from the street. This initiative reflects a growing trend towards sustainable energy solutions while respecting the aesthetic of historic neighborhoods.
