Clarksdale Officials Discuss $9K Landfill Equipment Proposal to Streamline Waste Management

During the recent Helena-West Helena City Council meeting, a significant discussion centered around the city's landfill operations and the need for new equipment to improve waste management. The council reviewed an invoice from KBH Corporation amounting to $9,558, which is intended for building an apparatus that will streamline the disposal process at the landfill. This new equipment aims to eliminate the necessity for external hauling contracts, potentially saving the city money and improving efficiency.

City officials highlighted that the current leachate truck is outdated and leaking, which poses environmental concerns. The proposed apparatus will include a new tank and necessary gauges to monitor the holding tanks at the landfill, as mandated by the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ). This upgrade is part of a long-standing effort to comply with a consent administrative order from ADEQ, which has been an ongoing issue since the landfill opened in 2006.

The council emphasized the importance of addressing these infrastructure needs to ensure proper waste management and environmental safety. Mr. Wilson from KBH Corporation was present at the meeting to answer any questions regarding the invoice and the proposed improvements.

In addition to the landfill discussion, the council also reviewed the treasurer's report, which was made available for council members to examine. The meeting underscored the city's commitment to enhancing its waste management systems while adhering to regulatory requirements, ultimately benefiting the community's health and safety.
