Manatee County Law Enforcement Enhances School Safety Protocols Amid Child Protection Concerns

The School Board Workshop held on August 29, 2025, by the School District of Manatee County focused on enhancing safety and security measures within schools, particularly in light of recent challenges related to child protection and mandatory reporting. The meeting featured key personnel from both the school district and the Manatee County Sheriff's Office, highlighting their collaborative efforts to ensure the health, welfare, and safety of students and staff.

The session began with an introduction from a district representative, who emphasized the extensive experience of the law enforcement team present, noting their combined expertise in safety and security. The discussion aimed to address critical issues such as harassment and child abuse, which are paramount in maintaining a safe educational environment.

Following the introduction, several law enforcement officials shared their backgrounds. Steve Kronos, the district's threat management coordinator, detailed his transition from law enforcement to education, while Paul D'Amico, chief of safety and security, brought 42 years of law enforcement experience, including work with the FBI. Troy Nelson, from the office of professional standards, discussed his role in investigating employee misconduct, and Captain Mark Morrie outlined his extensive experience in child protection investigations.

Lieutenant Julio Jordan, who oversees the School Resource Officer (SRO) unit, highlighted the importance of tactical training for SROs, including the recent implementation of carrying rifles to enhance school security. He emphasized the goal of making schools secure yet welcoming environments for students and staff.

Captain Morrie concluded the introductions by expressing gratitude for the collaboration between the sheriff's office and the school district, particularly in response to recent child crime investigations. He noted that the partnership has been instrumental in addressing safety concerns and improving protocols for handling sensitive cases.

The meeting underscored the commitment of both the school district and law enforcement to work together in fostering a safe educational atmosphere, with plans for ongoing discussions and training to further enhance their coordinated response to safety issues.
