Lancaster Independent School District Board Approves 10.48% Tax Rate Increase for 2025-2026

The Lancaster Independent School District (LISD) held a public hearing on August 30, 2025, to discuss the proposed budget for the fiscal year 2025-2026 and the associated tax rate for the 2025 tax year. The meeting culminated in a unanimous decision by the Board of Trustees to adopt a new property tax rate of 1.2244 per $100 of taxable value, marking a significant increase of 10.48% from the previous year.

The motion to increase the tax rate was introduced by Secretary Carolyn Morris and seconded by Vice President Queenie Nichols. Following a vote, the motion was carried unanimously, reflecting the board's consensus on the necessity of the increase to support district operations.

The adopted tax rate consists of two components: a maintenance and operations rate of 0.7869 per $100 of taxable value and an interest and sinking rate of 0.4375 per $100 of taxable value. This new rate exceeds the no-new-revenue tax rate, which is expected to generate increased revenue for the district.

The resolution also noted that the tax rate would result in higher taxes for maintenance and operations compared to the previous year. Specifically, it was projected that homeowners would see an increase of approximately $0.06 per $1,000 of home value.

Superintendent or her designee was authorized to take necessary actions to implement the resolution, including providing required notices and certifying the tax rate to the appropriate tax assessor collector. The resolution will take effect immediately upon adoption and will be signed by Board President Marianne Hamilton and Board Secretary Carolyn Ann Morris.

This decision underscores the district's commitment to maintaining and improving educational services while addressing financial obligations. The board's actions reflect a proactive approach to funding essential operations within the Lancaster Independent School District.
