City Council Approves New Public Service Station for Fire and CHP in District

A significant proposal to enhance public safety infrastructure in Woodland took center stage at the City Council meeting on September 2, 2025. Council members discussed plans for a new public service station on a recently acquired parcel of land from the school district, aimed at consolidating emergency response services, including the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and local fire departments.

One council member highlighted the urgent need for improved response times, particularly at the intersection of Bourne and Gibson, where emergency vehicles often face delays due to traffic signals. "The response time to get on Highway 101 or I-5 from this location is seconds compared to possible minutes getting stuck at this red light," they noted, emphasizing the importance of strategic planning for emergency services.

The proposal aims to create a multi-agency facility that would not only house fire services but also accommodate CHP units, thereby streamlining operations and enhancing public safety. The council member urged collaboration among various public service sectors to build a comprehensive infrastructure that meets the community's needs.

Support for the project was echoed by a representative from the fire department, who expressed gratitude for the council's consideration and collaboration in the design process. "It's a great need of ours to help provide service to the community," they stated.

The council unanimously approved the motion to accept the staff recommendation for the project, signaling strong support for the initiative. With a 5-0 vote, the council is set to move forward with plans that promise to bolster emergency response capabilities in Woodland, ensuring quicker access to critical services for residents.
