Hays County Commissioners Approve Burn Ban Amid Drought Conditions and Sewage Variance Request

The Hays County Commissioners Court convened on September 2, 2025, to address several key issues impacting the community, including the implementation of a burn ban and a variance request for an on-site sewage facility.

In a unanimous decision, the court approved a burn ban across the county. This measure, prompted by ongoing drought conditions reflected in a high drought index rating, aims to mitigate the risk of wildfires. Another significant topic discussed was a variance request concerning an on-site sewage facility for a property located at 1728 South FM 1626 in Buda. The property owner is seeking permission to replace a failing septic system on a 1.5-acre lot, which does not meet the county's minimum requirement of three acres due to a right-of-way expansion that reduced the property size. The city of Buda has recommended moving forward with the variance, acknowledging the property owner's hardship and the necessity of maintaining the facility, which serves an autism school. The court approved the variance, allowing the property owner to proceed with the necessary upgrades while agreeing to connect to the city’s wastewater service when it becomes available.

Additionally, the court authorized a professional services agreement with HNTB Corporation for engineering consulting services related to road projects. This agreement is part of ongoing efforts to enhance infrastructure in the county, ensuring that residents benefit from improved road conditions and safety.
