San Antonio Airport Enhances Accessibility with Sensory Rooms and Sunflower Program

San Antonio's airport is set to become a leader in accessibility, thanks to a series of innovative initiatives discussed during the City Council Special Session on September 2, 2025. Key among these is the introduction of the hidden disability sunflower program, designed to assist travelers with sensory challenges. This program allows individuals to wear a sunflower lanyard, signaling to airport staff that they require assistance, whether due to low visibility or hearing impairments.

Hazel, a representative from the airport, highlighted the program's importance and detailed the ongoing efforts to enhance accessibility. She mentioned the inclusion of sensory rooms in the new terminal expansion, aimed at providing a calming space for travelers with sensory sensitivities.

Tim O'Conley, the airport's deputy director, elaborated on the collaborative design process that involved over 35 community representatives. This group worked closely with designers to ensure that the airport would be one of the most barrier-free in the nation. O'Conley emphasized the airport's commitment to accessibility, sustainability, and customer service, noting that they are on track to become one of the first airports in the country accredited for their accessibility efforts.
