San Antonio ranks second nationally in design review speed behind San Diego

In a recent special session of the San Antonio City Council, discussions highlighted the city's impressive performance in commercial design review timelines, as well as staffing challenges within various departments. The meeting underscored the city's commitment to efficiency and responsiveness in commercial development, while also addressing the need for strategic hiring practices.

San Antonio has positioned itself as a leader in the nation for the speed of its commercial design reviews, taking an average of 209 days to process requests. This places the city second only to San Diego, which has an average of 176 days. In comparison, other major cities like Austin and Dallas have longer review times, with Austin at 486 days and Dallas at 302 days. The city aims to further improve its efficiency, with a goal of reducing the review period to 18 days upon receipt of applications.

However, the council also discussed the implications of staffing shortages, particularly in administrative roles. The city plans to freeze 42 positions, only filling vacancies deemed essential. This decision reflects a cautious approach to hiring amid ongoing evaluations of departmental needs. The council emphasized that while staffing levels are being scrutinized, the salaries for code enforcement officers remain competitive with other Texas cities, following a review process conducted a few years ago.
