Commissioners Launch Prostate Cancer Awareness Campaign for Overtown Residents

Miami-Dade County is taking significant steps to address critical health issues in the community, as highlighted during the recent Board of County Commissioners meeting. A key focus was the proclamation of September as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, aimed at encouraging early screening and treatment among men, particularly in the Overtown area.

Commissioner Keon Hardeman emphasized the importance of the "Take Your Loved One to the Doctor" campaign, which seeks to screen at least 250 Black men in Overtown for prostate cancer. This initiative, part of the Health Foundation of South Florida's Black Health Summit, aims to break the cycle of delayed medical care that often leads to worsened health outcomes. The campaign encourages men to schedule appointments within 90 days and to bring someone they care about along, fostering a supportive environment for health discussions.

The meeting also featured remarks from Health Foundation President and CEO Loreen Chan, who underscored the mission to advance health equity, ensuring that factors like ZIP codes do not dictate health outcomes. The initiative is particularly vital as prostate cancer disproportionately affects Black and Hispanic men, making awareness and action crucial for saving lives.

In addition to prostate cancer awareness, the commissioners proclaimed September as Hunger Action Month, addressing food insecurity affecting over 1.2 million South Floridians. The initiative aims to raise awareness about hunger in the community and promote programs that ensure no one goes to bed hungry. The collaboration with Feeding South Florida and local nonprofits highlights ongoing efforts to combat food insecurity through innovative solutions.
