Miami Dade County Council discusses employee layoffs and proposed CBO trust fund

Miami-Dade County officials are taking significant steps to address the potential layoffs of hundreds of county employees amid rising living costs. During a recent Board of County Commissioners meeting, concerns were raised about the emotional and financial impact on employees facing job loss. Commissioner Regalado highlighted the urgent need for support, stating that many employees are struggling with basic necessities like food and housing.

The administration confirmed that approximately 378 positions are slated for termination, with 251 currently occupied by employees. To mitigate the impact, the county is implementing a process to assist affected employees in finding new positions within the county. This includes expedited hiring processes to help employees transition before their termination dates.

In response to the crisis, Regalado proposed an amendment to expedite human resources processes for impacted employees, ensuring they have adequate time to secure new jobs. The amendment was accepted, emphasizing the county's commitment to supporting its workforce during this challenging time.

Additionally, the board discussed the scheduling of future meetings, moving the next Board of County Commissioners meeting from October 7 to October 9 to accommodate observances of the Jewish holiday Sukkot, ensuring broader community participation.

The meeting also included discussions on the creation of a Community-Based Organization (CBO) trust fund, with plans to address funding sources and fiscal impacts in future committee meetings. This initiative aims to support local organizations while considering the broader implications for the community.
