Onslow County Launches Road Maintenance Initiative In Community Kickoff Meeting

Onslow County is taking significant steps to improve local road conditions and enhance community engagement. During a recent government meeting, officials announced a kickoff meeting scheduled for September 10 at 6 PM at the Onslow County Government Center. This meeting aims to address the concerns of residents regarding neglected roads that are not maintained by the state.

Joseph Bauer, the senior planner for the county's planning and development department, emphasized the importance of community input in identifying problematic roadways. Residents are encouraged to attend and share information about roads in their neighborhoods that require attention. The county has set aside $2 million to assist in the evaluation and potential petitioning of the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) to take over maintenance of these roads.

Bauer explained that the process will involve a thorough assessment of the roads, guided by a criteria matrix, to ensure that the most critical areas are prioritized. This initiative is a direct response to public grievances voiced at board meetings, showcasing the county's commitment to addressing community needs.

In addition to road improvements, the meeting also highlighted the upcoming Senior Center Month in September, led by Ashley Gordonier from Onslow County Senior Services. The theme for this year's celebration is "Flip the Script on Aging," focusing on wellness and socialization among seniors. Activities planned for the month include a staff versus participants volleyball game and various educational presentations.

The senior center, currently located at 4955 Richlands Highway, is temporarily housed in a former retail space but is set to expand in the future. Gordonier expressed excitement about the vibrant community atmosphere and the diverse range of activities available to seniors, fostering connections and support among participants.

Both initiatives reflect Onslow County's proactive approach to enhancing infrastructure and community services, aiming to create a more connected and supportive environment for all residents.
