Superintendent Taylor Reports Safe School Opening and Ongoing Construction Updates

Excitement filled the air as Petersburg Borough's school year kicked off, with Superintendent Miss Taylor reporting a successful first day. She expressed gratitude for the freshly painted crosswalks around the elementary school, enhancing safety for students navigating the area.

In her update, Taylor highlighted the upcoming release of the Alaska STAR assessment results, which will be made public this Friday. She also reminded residents about ongoing construction projects, urging caution around the middle high school and the church across from the elementary school.

A significant moment during the meeting was Taylor's acknowledgment of a recent incident at the school, commending local law enforcement for their swift response. Officers arrived within one to one-and-a-half minutes of the call, with a total of eight or nine officers ensuring safety during the situation. A follow-up meeting with stakeholders is scheduled to review safety practices and identify areas for improvement.

As daylight hours decrease with the approach of fall, Taylor urged parents to equip children with reflective gear for added safety.

Following the school report, Mayor's report focused on absentee and early voting details. Applications for absentee ballots are available online and at the Municipal Building, with early voting set to begin on September 17. Residents can vote in person on Election Day, October 7, at the Parks and Rec Activities Room.
