Marcus Jones Announces New Standard Response Protocol for MCPS School Safety

Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) is taking significant steps to enhance school safety with the introduction of a new Standard Response Protocol (SRP) aimed at improving emergency preparedness across its schools. During a recent Board of Education work session, Marcus Jones, a representative from the district's safety and emergency management team, outlined the protocol, which has already been implemented in several schools.

The SRP, developed in collaboration with the I Love U Guys Foundation, aims to streamline emergency communication and actions by providing a common language for students, staff, and parents. This initiative is particularly timely as it addresses the need for clarity in emergency situations, reducing confusion and ensuring that everyone knows how to respond effectively.

Jones emphasized that all school administrators received training in August, while staff participated in pre-service training to familiarize themselves with the new terminology. Students will also be educated on the protocol through age-appropriate lessons and presentations throughout September and October. The five key terms of the protocol—evacuate, shelter, lockdown, hold, and secure—have been simplified to enhance understanding. For instance, "hold" replaces the previous term "shelter in place," allowing for a more straightforward response to situations like medical emergencies, while "secure" addresses external threats.

To reinforce this new protocol, MCPS has installed updated signage in schools and will provide parents with guides and reference cards, available in both digital and paper formats. The district is committed to ensuring consistency across all schools, which is crucial for effective emergency responses.

Jones noted the importance of practicing these protocols, citing a recent incident in Rockville where students and staff effectively applied their training during an emergency situation. This proactive approach not only enhances safety but also fosters a culture of preparedness within the school community.
