Prince George's County Council has taken significant steps towards expanding local commercial and mining operations during its recent meeting on September 8, 2025. The council approved a special exception for Holsammar Inc. to expand its existing surface mining operation in District 9, located on the south side of MD 373. This expansion will cover approximately 8.02 acres and is expected to enhance the extraction of sand and gravel in the area. The approval process included conditions set by the park and planning technical staff, and the zoning hearing examiner also endorsed the plan.
Council member Harrison proposed waiving the council election review for this matter, which was unanimously supported by the council, indicating a strong consensus on the importance of this expansion for local economic development.
In addition to the mining operation, the council reviewed plans for the Forestville Center, proposed by NSR Petro Services LLC. This project aims to develop an 8,674 square foot commercial shopping center on 1.37 acres located near Maryville Pike. The planning board had previously approved this project with conditions, and the council is set to address it further in a meeting scheduled for September 16, 2025.
Another notable discussion involved the South Lake Commercial Phase 1 project, which seeks to amend an approved detailed site plan for additional signage and revised architecture on a 59.83-acre site in District 4. This project is also progressing through the approval process, with a review date set for September 30, 2025.
These developments reflect the council's commitment to fostering economic growth and enhancing community resources in Prince George's County. As these projects move forward, they are expected to create jobs and improve local infrastructure, benefiting residents and businesses alike.
