Sports tourism is set to soar in Williamsburg, with city officials optimistic about the future of youth sports in the region. During the City Council Work Session on September 8, 2025, discussions highlighted the resilience of the youth sports sector, which is reportedly "recession-proof." Although specific growth projections were not available, the council noted a promising trend of year-over-year growth, with a notable recovery in golf during the pandemic.
The excitement doesn't stop there. Plans are already underway for a committee to organize events surrounding the opening of new sports facilities, potentially coinciding with the city's 250th anniversary celebrations. While the exact opening date remains uncertain, the anticipation is building for a series of tournaments and events scheduled over the next three years.
In addition to sports tourism, the meeting featured a presentation from Steve Harrison, Chief Operating Officer of the Hampton Roads Alliance. He emphasized the importance of regional economic development and the role of the Eastern Virginia Regional Industrial Facilities Authority (EVRIFA). Harrison outlined the Alliance's strategic focus on enhancing business attraction, retention, and expansion, particularly in key sectors such as defense, energy, aerospace, and logistics.
The Hampton Roads Playbook, set to launch in October, aims to proactively address economic challenges and leverage local strengths. Harrison expressed confidence in the region's ability to attract significant investments and create jobs, citing a successful shift in economic development strategies since 2020.
As Williamsburg gears up for a vibrant future in both sports tourism and economic growth, the city is poised to capitalize on its unique assets and foster a thriving community.
