The Edmond City Council has taken significant steps to enhance local parks and improve the city’s financial health during its recent meeting on September 8, 2025. A key decision was the approval of new playground equipment for Westborough Park, a move that aligns with the city’s strategic plan to invest in the maintenance and enhancement of existing park properties. This initiative received the backing of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board earlier this year and is part of a broader effort to upgrade neighborhood parks across Edmond.
In addition to the playground project, the council discussed a potential $3 million grant application to the Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust (TSET). If successful, this funding would support various projects, including the development of an inclusive playground at Mitch Park, designed to accommodate children of all abilities. The council is optimistic about advancing to the next phase of this grant application, with updates expected soon.
On the financial front, the council proposed a reduction of $1.19 million in the adopted budget for the fiscal year 2025-2026. This adjustment aims to increase the unassigned fund balance in the general fund from 7.03% to 8.39%. The proposed cuts will affect 34 departments funded by the general fund, with an average reduction of 4% across these areas. Notably, public safety departments, including police and fire services, will not be impacted by these budget cuts.
The council emphasized the importance of maintaining fiscal responsibility while continuing to monitor expenses and revenues closely. A budget amendment reflecting these changes will be presented at the next meeting on September 22. The ongoing hiring freeze for non-public safety positions remains in effect, and the Budget Reform Committee is expected to provide further recommendations by December.
These decisions reflect the council's commitment to enhancing community resources while ensuring financial stability, ultimately aiming to improve the quality of life for Edmond residents.
