During the recent Los Angeles City Council meeting, members took a moment to honor the memory of Kathy Wooten, a dedicated advocate for victims of violence and a beloved figure in the Watts community. Wooten, who passed away recently, was known for her tireless efforts to support families affected by violence, particularly after the tragic loss of her two sons to street violence in 2008.
Wooten founded Loving Hands Community Care, an organization that provided a safe space for grieving families, offering support through programs such as monthly grief support groups and mentorship initiatives. Her commitment to helping others was evident in her organization’s signature Mother’s Day brunch, which brought together mothers who had lost children to violence, allowing them to share their experiences and find solace in one another.
In addition to her work with Loving Hands, Wooten was actively involved in the mayor's Bridal program as a victim's advocate and was part of the inaugural cohort of the UCLA Watts Leadership Institute. Her contributions were recognized in 2021 when her organization received a $50,000 grant from the LA Super Bowl Host Committee Legacy Champions Program.
The council expressed deep condolences to Wooten's family and the community, acknowledging her profound impact on many lives. A candlelight vigil is scheduled for September 10 at Ted Watkins Park from 5 to 7 PM to honor her legacy and the countless individuals she supported throughout her life. The city of Los Angeles stands united in mourning her loss, recognizing her unwavering commitment to helping others in their times of need.
