In a recent meeting of the New Castle County Public Safety Committee, critical discussions unfolded regarding public safety enhancements and emergency preparedness initiatives. Under the warm glow of city hall lights, Chris Hodgson, the coordinator of emergency management, presented two significant projects aimed at bolstering local safety measures.

The first project involves the acquisition of a mobile surveillance camera, while the second focuses on a software system known as the force matrix for the police department. These initiatives are funded through leftover resources from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) via the Delaware Emergency Management Agency (DEMA). Hodgson confirmed that the county is on track to complete these projects by the September deadline, having already taken delivery of the mobile surveillance trailer.

Council members sought clarification on the funding process, with Hodgson explaining that the equipment is purchased by DEMA using FEMA funds and then donated to the county through a memorandum of understanding. This arrangement ensures that the county can enhance its public safety capabilities without incurring additional costs.

Following Hodgson's presentation, Patrick O'Donnell from DEMA provided insights into the Delaware Radiological Emergency Preparedness Program. O'Donnell emphasized the importance of this program in coordinating efforts to safeguard public health in the event of a nuclear power plant incident, particularly concerning the Salem Hope Creek Nuclear Power Plant. He outlined the program's structure, which includes developing emergency plans, conducting quarterly drills, and participating in biannual FEMA-evaluated exercises to ensure readiness.

O'Donnell also discussed the distribution of potassium iodide (KI) to residents within the emergency planning zone, a crucial measure to protect against radioactive iodine exposure. He announced upcoming KI distribution events, reinforcing the state's commitment to public safety.

As the meeting concluded, the council members expressed their appreciation for the updates, highlighting the ongoing efforts to enhance safety and preparedness in New Castle County. The discussions underscored a proactive approach to public safety, ensuring that the community remains vigilant and ready to respond to potential emergencies.
