Miami-Dade County officials are taking bold steps to enhance fire safety and response times in the face of growing urban development. During the recent Miami-Dade Safety and Health Committee meeting, discussions centered on innovative strategies to address the county's pressing need for additional fire stations.

Chief Reyes highlighted the department's commitment to expanding resources, revealing plans to add new fire units next year. "We only had 2 units budgeted this fiscal year, but we added 6 units," he stated, emphasizing the importance of strategic placement to reduce response times. The department is also exploring partnerships with developers to incorporate fire stations into new housing projects, particularly in areas where traditional funding through impact fees falls short.

Commissioner Wiggins underscored the urgency of the situation, linking the need for fire stations to the county's housing crisis. "We are building townhouses and allowing smaller houses, which is the only way to solve our affordability crisis," he said. Wiggins proposed a collaborative approach to zoning that would require developers to allocate space for fire stations in new developments, similar to existing practices for water and sewer infrastructure.

The committee expressed a strong commitment to finding solutions, with plans to review zoning processes and potentially codify requirements for fire station space in new developments. "We need help... to figure out if it's legal," Wiggins noted, indicating a willingness to sacrifice some housing units for the greater good of community safety.
