Amarillo's City Council has approved a budget for the Amarillo Potter Events Venue District, which anticipates nearly $4.6 million in revenue for the upcoming year. This budget, primarily funded through a 2% hotel occupancy tax and a 5% car rental tax, will support various improvements at the Tri State Fairgrounds and the Civic Center.
Key expenditures include approximately $1.2 million for enhancements at the Tri State Fairgrounds, which will feature aesthetic upgrades such as a new wooden fence and concrete barriers to improve safety. Additional funds will be allocated for water and wastewater utility improvements, internet upgrades, and remodeling efforts at the Amarillo National Center.
The budget also includes a $500,000 management contract with the Tri State Fairgrounds Group and $200,000 for property insurance. Furthermore, the venue district plans to incentivize events at the fairgrounds with a budget of $449,500.
At the Civic Center, $908,000 will be invested in critical upgrades, including fire alarm and cooling tower replacements, as well as IT and audio enhancements. The budget also accounts for an annual debt service of approximately $785,000 related to previous projects.
This budget was previously approved by the venue district and Potter County commissioners, with the City Council's endorsement marking the final step in the approval process. The council's decision reflects a commitment to enhancing local facilities and promoting community events, ensuring that Amarillo remains a vibrant hub for entertainment and gatherings.
