A new wellness policy aimed at enhancing student health and nutrition was a focal point at the St. Bernard Parish School Board's General Committee Meeting on September 9, 2025. The initiative, led by Michael Morrell, emphasizes the importance of a healthy diet and physical activity in fostering better learning outcomes for students.
Morrell highlighted that healthier eating habits contribute to improved academic performance, reduced absenteeism, and fewer behavioral issues in the classroom. The proposed wellness policy includes comprehensive strategies for nutrition education, physical activity, and the promotion of healthy food options within schools. "Creating this healthy school environment takes a team effort," Morrell stated, underscoring the collaboration among teachers, parents, and community leaders.
Key components of the policy involve soliciting feedback from students and parents through an online questionnaire set to launch in October. This feedback will guide menu adjustments to better meet the needs and preferences of the student body. Additionally, Morrell is coordinating with vendors to organize a food show at local schools, allowing students to sample and provide input on potential new menu items.
The meeting also addressed the importance of maintaining a positive cafeteria environment, with plans to display vibrant, educational posters promoting healthy eating. Morrell noted that the school district adheres to national nutrition guidelines, ensuring that meals served are nutritious and appealing.
Looking ahead, the wellness committee will reconvene on January 16, 2026, at Sherman Elementary to discuss the gathered feedback and further refine the wellness policy. This proactive approach aims to empower students with the knowledge and skills to make healthier choices, ultimately fostering a healthier school community.
