Wyandotte County is set to embark on an ambitious redevelopment initiative in the Douglas Sumner neighborhood, following a recent meeting of the Economic Development & Finance and Neighborhood & Community Development Standing Committees. The plan, which aims to kickstart phase one of the Douglas Sumner redevelopment, includes the construction of 29 new housing units, primarily single-family homes, duplexes, and accessory dwelling units. This project is expected to cost approximately $7.1 million and is designed to enhance community living while addressing the growing demand for affordable housing.
The Community Housing of Wyandotte County (CHWC) is spearheading this effort, with 20 homes currently under construction across various locations, including the Ripper's Edge East subdivision and Waterway Park. Since its inception, CHWC has renovated or repaired over 800 homes, generating more than $178 million in community investment. The new housing units in Douglas Sumner are strategically planned to coincide with the upcoming Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) project, ensuring that infrastructure improvements align with residential development.
During the meeting, committee members expressed enthusiasm for incorporating features that support aging in place, such as wider doorways and accessible designs. This consideration stems from previous community listening sessions focused on the needs of older adults. While the current plans include some senior-friendly housing options, CHWC aims to further explore targeted developments for seniors in the future.
In addition to the Douglas Sumner project, the committee approved a property transfer for a garden initiative on Oakland Avenue, which will contribute to the community's green space and enhance local engagement. The approval process was smooth, with no public comments opposing the initiatives.
As Wyandotte County moves forward with these developments, officials emphasized the importance of community involvement and the responsibility of new property owners to maintain their properties. The initiatives reflect a commitment to fostering sustainable growth and improving living conditions for residents, setting a positive trajectory for the county's future.
