The Arlington Heights Building, Zoning and Economic Development Committee recently took significant steps to support the preservation of the community's historic sites. During the meeting on September 10, 2025, the committee approved a resolution authorizing the summer 2025 historic preservation grants, which will allow the mayor to enter into grant agreements and addendums.
This year, the city council allocated $1 million for the historic preservation grant program, expanding eligibility to include both owner-occupied properties and rental units with up to five living units. This change aims to encourage a broader range of property owners to participate in preserving Arlington Heights' rich history.
The program also saw an increase in the maximum grant amount, rising from $20,000 to $30,000. Notably, any grants exceeding $15,000 will require a dollar-for-dollar match from the property owners. To further incentivize local engagement, the program includes a $1,000 bonus for contractors who are local, which can be applied toward the matching funds.
In total, staff received 39 applications from various local districts, national register districts, and local landmarks, indicating a strong interest in preserving the community's historical assets. This initiative not only aims to maintain the character of Arlington Heights but also supports local contractors and businesses, fostering a sense of community pride and economic development.
As the city moves forward with these grants, residents can look forward to seeing enhancements in their neighborhoods that honor the history and heritage of Arlington Heights.
