The Yellowstone County Commissioner meeting on June 27, 2023, focused on the Long Range Transportation Plan update, presented by Andy Deliden from Kittelson and Associates. The plan, which is updated every five years, outlines a framework for developing a multimodal transportation system in the urban area, looking ahead to 2045.
Deliden emphasized the importance of community outreach in shaping the plan, which included public open houses and an interactive online map for residents to provide feedback. The outreach efforts garnered significant input, with over 300 comments on transportation deficiencies and 243 comments on the draft project list.
The Long Range Transportation Plan identifies five key goals: safety, resiliency, mobility, equity and accessibility, and economic vitality. It encompasses 122 miles of roadways, over 40 miles of bicycle facilities, and 86 miles of trails, serving a projected population of approximately 191,000 by 2045.
A total of 416 projects have been proposed, categorized into committed, recommended, and illustrative projects, with a total estimated cost of nearly $988 million. The plan's revenue projections stand at approximately $1.25 billion, ensuring it meets the fiscal constraints required for transportation planning.
The commissioners were asked to recommend the plan to the Policy Coordinating Committee, with the aim of moving forward for adoption in mid-July. This update is crucial for guiding future transportation development and addressing community needs in Yellowstone County.
