Missy Harper, a fifth-grade science teacher at Oakville Elementary School, highlighted the success of the school's STEAM program during the recent Spanish Fort City Council meeting. Harper reported that students from third to sixth grade engage in hands-on activities that enhance their understanding of the scientific process, leading to significant improvements in test scores.

"Our science scores on the ACAP have improved dramatically," Harper stated, noting that Rockwell's scores stand at 68%, well above the state average of 39%. This achievement reflects the effectiveness of the STEAM program, which allows students to explore scientific concepts in real-world contexts. "The kids absolutely love the program and look forward to it every week," she added.

Harper also emphasized the importance of the 3 mill ad valorem tax, which was approved years ago and contributes to funding educational initiatives. She explained that the additional revenue has positively impacted test scores across all schools in the district, creating a strong educational foundation from elementary through high school.

As the meeting opened for public participation, Harper's remarks underscored the critical role of community support in enhancing educational opportunities for students in Spanish Fort. The council's acknowledgment of these achievements sets the stage for continued investment in local education.
