City officials in Delray Beach are taking decisive action to address safety concerns at a problematic intersection following a recent paint job that has drawn criticism. During a special city commission meeting on September 9, 2025, the commission discussed the potential for hydro blasting or sandblasting to remove the newly applied paint, which has been deemed distracting and hazardous for drivers.
The commission is currently awaiting a decision from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) regarding a petition for a stay on the enforcement of an order related to the intersection. If granted, this stay would allow the city to proceed with cleanup efforts without violating the order. City officials emphasized the urgency of the situation, citing safety as their primary concern.
Public Works Director Missy Barletta provided insights into the cleanup process, explaining that hydro blasting, which uses water to minimize dust, is similar to sandblasting but may not be feasible due to noise concerns for nearby residents and the Hilton Hotel. The commission is considering a more immediate solution, focusing on sandblasting the stop bar and crosswalk areas to ensure traffic control devices are visible and effective.
Barletta noted that the paint applied during rainy conditions has already begun to wash away, suggesting that further rain could assist in the cleanup. However, she cautioned that the intersection may not return to its original pristine condition without complete removal of the paint.
The commission's discussions reflect a proactive approach to maintaining public safety and ensuring that traffic control measures are clearly visible. As the city awaits further guidance from FDOT, officials are committed to exploring all options to resolve the issue swiftly and effectively.
