Donna Hennessey, a beloved educator in the CCSD 62 district, has dedicated over six decades to teaching, starting her career in 1960 at South School. After a fulfilling tenure that lasted until February 2007, Hennessey transitioned to substitute teaching, a role she continues to embrace with enthusiasm.
Reflecting on her journey, Hennessey described her time at South School as "glorious," particularly her experience teaching third grade, which she considered a "utopia." Despite her comfort in that grade level, she accepted a challenge when asked to substitute for eighth grade, a decision that initially filled her with apprehension. However, a warm greeting from a former student helped ease her nerves, reminding her of the strong connections she has built over the years.
Hennessey has since enjoyed the variety that comes with substitute teaching, exploring different grade levels from preschool to middle school. She expressed excitement about the opportunities that lie ahead, emphasizing the positive impact her work has on her mental health. Each day brings new experiences, making her role as an educator both rewarding and dynamic.
As Hennessey continues her journey in education, her passion for teaching and commitment to her students remain evident, inspiring both colleagues and the community. Her story highlights the importance of adaptability and the joy of lifelong learning in the field of education.
