The Farmington City Council has taken a significant step towards enhancing security at the Farmington Police Station by approving a variance request for an 8-foot tall decorative metal fence. This decision was made during the Planning Commission meeting held on July 8, 2025, and is expected to bolster the safety and functionality of the facility located at 19500 Municipal Drive.
The city is seeking this variance to exceed the maximum height requirement for fences, which is typically capped at 6 feet in residential areas. The proposed fence will not only provide a robust physical barrier but will also feature brick columns that match the existing police station's architecture, ensuring aesthetic coherence. The city received a substantial grant of $869,000 last year specifically for this fence installation, highlighting the project's importance.
The new fence will enclose the entire police station, including the parking lot and additional open spaces, while being set back appropriately from surrounding roadways. However, it will encroach into a 100-foot wide natural gas easement, necessitating an encroachment agreement with Northern Natural Gas. City officials have indicated that preliminary discussions with the gas company suggest that obtaining this approval should not pose significant challenges.
In addition to the variance, a building permit will be required due to the fence's height, ensuring compliance with local regulations. The Planning Commission emphasized the necessity of meeting nine specific criteria to justify the variance, which are designed to address practical difficulties in the approval process.
This initiative not only aims to enhance the security of the police station but also reflects the city's commitment to maintaining a safe environment for its personnel and the community. As the project moves forward, residents can expect to see improvements that will contribute to the overall safety and functionality of the municipal campus.
