Decatur County's County Council meeting on September 16, 2025, highlighted significant advancements in local health services, particularly through the GSB Health Plan. Executive Director Emily Hurston presented exciting updates, including a $90,000 investment in new dental equipment funded by grants and donations, set to be operational by October.
Hurston emphasized the importance of their services, which cater to the underinsured and uninsured, offering medical visits for just $10 and dental for $20. The council also celebrated a substantial $250,000 grant from the Lilly Foundation aimed at expanding mental health services in the community. This funding will support additional space at the Will Keep Plaza and cover transportation costs for patients seeking various health services.
The meeting underscored the growing demand for these services, as many families are returning for assistance due to cuts in Medicaid at the federal and state levels. Hurston noted that the GSB Health Plan has been serving over 100 families in Decatur County, with numbers on the rise as community needs evolve.
In addition to health services, the GSB Health Plan has successfully operated a food pantry for nearly three years, providing essential support to those in need without stigma. The council expressed gratitude for the funding received and reiterated their commitment to supporting local health initiatives.
As the GSB Health Plan prepares to enhance its offerings, the council anticipates a positive impact on community health outcomes in the coming months.
