The county’s monthly construction update, delivered by John Hernandez, county engineer, put the current Justice Center payout at “approximately $2,900,000,” and said that brought “project completion to about approximately 57% complete.” Hernandez said construction work recently began on parking lots and that structural and systems inspections have not identified outstanding issues.

“First Floor, most of the electrical boxes have been installed,” Hernandez said. He reported that sanitary piping on the first floor was about 50% installed, fire suppression roughly 80% complete on level one and 40% on level two, and that fire-alarm work had not begun. Fulton Poston and Tim McCandless joined Hernandez for the presentation.

Tim McCandless, representing the construction team, described exterior progress and remaining work on the roof and drainage. “Currently, we’re about 60% complete,” McCandless said. He said the penthouse roof was installed, the project team was working on waterproofing so windows and brick can be set, and that limestone, brick and windows had been delivered. He said courthouse courtroom millwork and furniture are being built locally in Corpus Christi.

County staff said they remain on track for a late-spring to early-summer move-in window for the Justice Center, with an anticipated initial occupancy in April or May followed by renovation of the old courthouse. Hernandez said the county expects to receive 50% construction documents for the courthouse renovation by the end of the year and 100% construction documents in the spring, with a guaranteed maximum price (GMP) developed in January or February.

Hernandez noted the project’s critical path is related to third-floor mechanical, electrical and plumbing work. McCandless reiterated that roof and mechanical completion for the third floor will drive the schedule.
