The Austin Downtown Commission meeting held on September 17, 2025, focused on the establishment of a Downtown Strategic Office aimed at enhancing the vibrancy, safety, and economic vitality of downtown Austin. The meeting began with Deputy City Manager Fortune introducing Rob Trevino, a policy adviser, to discuss the initiative inspired by the mayor's vision for a coordinated approach to downtown development.
The primary goal of the initiative is to consolidate various efforts from city departments, private organizations, and corporate partners to ensure alignment and avoid duplication of resources. The council had previously passed a resolution directing the city manager to develop a comprehensive strategic initiative for downtown projects, which include mobility, arts and culture, economic development, public safety, and green spaces.
Fortune clarified that the Downtown Strategic Office would not manage all downtown efforts but would serve as a convener to facilitate collaboration among stakeholders. The office will report to an assistant city manager and is in the process of filling two key positions: a downtown strategic officer and a community solutions officer, expected to be filled within 60 days.
Trevino then provided updates on ongoing projects, particularly focusing on the Sixth Street pilot program, which aims to enhance safety and connectivity in the area. A multidisciplinary task force has been established, comprising various city departments, to implement three main strategies: strengthening law enforcement, improving the physical environment to deter crime, and collaborating with external partners to sustain progress.
Key initiatives discussed included the installation of concrete barricades for better traffic management, improvements to alleyway lighting, expanded parking garage hours at the convention center, and the establishment of designated rideshare areas to enhance transportation coordination.
The meeting concluded with an emphasis on the importance of stakeholder engagement and outreach to ensure that the needs of downtown residents and workers are met as the initiative progresses. The overall aim is to create a safer, more vibrant downtown that serves as a welcoming space for the entire community.
